Quick recommendation: New to Lightning? Start with Strike (simplest, beginner-friendly). Want full self-custody? Use Phoenix Wallet. Running a business? Use Breez or BTCPay Server.

Custodial vs non-custodial: what's the difference?

Before comparing wallets, understand this key distinction:

  • Custodial wallets — the app provider holds your keys. Easier to use, but you're trusting a third party. Fine for small daily amounts.
  • Non-custodial wallets — you control your own keys. More complex to set up, but fully sovereign. Recommended for significant amounts.

Strike — best for beginners

Strike is the most user-friendly Lightning wallet available. Link your bank account or debit card, buy Bitcoin and send Lightning payments — all in a clean, intuitive interface. Strike absorbs Lightning fees for standard transactions, making it effectively free to use for everyday amounts.

The trade-off: Strike is custodial. You don't hold your own keys. For amounts under €100 used for everyday spending, this is acceptable. For savings, use a hardware wallet instead.

Phoenix Wallet — best non-custodial

Phoenix Wallet by ACINQ is the gold standard for non-custodial Lightning wallets. It handles all the complexity of channel management automatically — you just install the app and start transacting. Your keys, your bitcoin.

Phoenix charges a small fee when opening new payment channels (0.3% + 3,000 sat), but once channels are open, transaction fees are minimal. The open-source code is publicly auditable.

Wallet of Satoshi — simplest overall

Wallet of Satoshi (WoS) is the simplest Lightning wallet in existence. Open the app, you have a Lightning address and can receive and send immediately. Zero configuration. Fully custodial — do not use for large amounts or long-term storage.

Wallet of Satoshi
★★★★☆
Zero setup. Purely custodial. Best for tiny amounts and testing Lightning.

Breez — best for businesses

Breez Wallet is non-custodial and includes a built-in point-of-sale (POS) feature, making it ideal for small businesses and freelancers who want to accept Bitcoin Lightning payments directly. It also has a podcast streaming feature and supports Bolt12 for recurring payments.

Breez Wallet
★★★★☆
Non-custodial with POS features. Great for small businesses accepting Lightning.

Our advice: Use Strike for daily small payments (under €50), Phoenix for regular Lightning use where you want self-custody, and a hardware wallet (Trezor or Ledger) for savings. This mirrors how most experienced Bitcoin users structure their funds.
